About this location

Set in an arid, sandy clearing with the ocean visible on the horizon, Sanatorio de Abona is a derelict site where a roofless, partially collapsed stone building with a central arched doorway stands among tire tracks leading up to the ruins. Inside, a semicircular room with purple-painted walls is covered in graffiti, including a large back-wall mural of a multi-eyed purple creature marked TAC, flanked by narrow arched windows and a raised concrete platform with shallow steps. Empty rectangular rooms show peeling white paint, exposed plaster, dark open doorways, and concrete floors littered with dirt and debris, heavily tagged with colorful lettering and a cartoon mural of a top-hatted man holding a beer stein. Sunlight pools through windows onto the dusty floors and highlights ceiling stains and scattered debris, giving the quiet, vandalized interior a bright, open feel. The whole place remains exposed to the flat coastal landscape and clear blue sky.
