The Forgotten Spartan Bridge
About this location
Out near South Holland's flat grey horizon, the old railway line dies into a tangle of weeds and rusted tracks that lead straight to the Spartan Bridge. The bridge itself is a canvas of decay: blue railings and faded panels clash with massive red, black, and white graffiti tags, while the lower walls, support pillars, and concrete blocks are so layered in street art—including a cartoon face—that the original structure barely shows through. Yellow wildflowers and stubborn grass push up through gravel and weathered asphalt, softening the industrial skeleton of wire masts, chain-link fencing, and circular cutouts. The empty deck curves away toward trees and modern streetlights, and from the spots just across the water, the whole quiet, desolate scene stretches out under an overcast sky.
