The Big Small Bunker

About this location

Set about 100 metres from the beach at Wissant in Pas-de-Calais, this large concrete bunker sits embedded in a sandy dune, its tilted rectangular wall marked by horizontal seams, cracks, and red, white, and grey graffiti. Two small circular openings are visible on the weathered concrete face, while dry scrub grass grows around the base and bare sand stretches across the foreground under a blue sky. Sunlit, exposed, and isolated, the bunker’s sloping incline has let windblown sand seal off all but a short section at the entrance. Only that small entrance area remains accessible, with the rest of the structure filled in by the dune.
