Sanatorium du Basil is a strange, in-between kind of decay: ivy-choked stone facades and smashed windows give way to concrete halls where daylight pours through broken rooflines, throwing black graffiti and a few bright orange paint marks across dusty floors and rubble. Inside, long corridors of crumbling masonry and stained ceilings run beneath arched windows, while an overgrown lawn and another decaying wing sit quietly beyond a pillar-lined walkway. The site has already been sold and is slated to become a five-star wellness hotel, so the perimeter fence is easy to bypass on the left; an alarm sounds but dies out after ten meters, and the many cameras are only there to discourage vandalism. It’s a photogenic spot if you happen to be in Liège, though perhaps not worth a special trip.
